71th Republic day special 2020: know what is the history of 26 January
India is a country of diverse religions, beliefs and cultures and every day some festival is celebrated here. People of every religion celebrate their festivals with full enthusiasm, but there are some festivals which are important for every countryman and are celebrated with respect and affection all over the country. 26 January is also one such day, which is the national festival of the country. Every citizen of the country, irrespective of their religion, caste or creed, celebrates this day with national love.
Speaking of history, the Constitution of India came into force on this day. India got independence from the British on 15 August 1947, but on 26 January 1950, India was declared a sovereign democratic republic. On this day, the main event to be held at Rajpath in the capital presents a cultural glimpse of India as well as tableaux of military power and traditional heritage.
A series of other important events recorded on 26 January in the history of the country are as follows: -
1556: Death of Mughal Emperor Humayun from falling down stairs.
1930: Swaraj Day was celebrated for the first time in India under British rule.
1931: Mahatma Gandhi was released for talks with the British government during the 'Civil Disobedience Movement'.
1950: The Constitution of independent India came into force and India was declared a sovereign democratic republic. Henceforth this day was celebrated as Republic Day.
1950: C. Gopalachari stepped down as the last Governor General of India and Dr. Rajendra Prasad took over as the first President of the country.
1950: The Ashoka Pillar was adopted as the national emblem.
1950: The Federal Court of India, established in 1937, was made the Supreme Court of India.
1957: The Indian side of Jammu and Kashmir was formally made part of India.
1963: The peacock with crown-like crest and beautiful winged feather on the forehead was declared a national bird.
1972: National Memorial Amar Jawan Jyoti unveiled at India Gate, Delhi.
1981: Vayudoot aircraft service launched.
1982: To enjoy the royal and luxurious experience of the tourists during the train journey, the Indian Railways started the Palace on Wheels service.
2001: A 7.7-magnitude earthquake hits Bhuj in Gujarat, killing thousands.
2008: On the occasion of Republic Day, the country's first female President Pratibha Patil took the parade salute.
