Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson's best 'New Year's Eve party' moments — updated live
NBC is attracting the millennial and Gen-Z demographics with its New Year's Eve centerpiece, "The Miley's New Years Eve Party, Hosted by Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson." The live special airs Friday, December 31st from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. on NBC, with a livestream on Peacock.
The Miami-based event began with Davidson and Cyrus rapping a long parody version of Will Smith's "Miami", with Davidson joking that Bill Cosby and Kevin Spacey might show up to celebrate. Shots of fans taking their masks to the side to captivate the crowd immediately followed, setting the tone for the night.
After a brief joint monologue with jokes about COVID and crying along with Cyrus' lyrics (who isn't?!), the two performed a spirited performance of "Tap In" and "Icy Chain" from Savatey alongside masked backup dancers. Presented. The musical continued with a quick transition to Anita performing "Facking Love" with Savatee's return for this feature.
Davidson returned after the commercial to deliver a bit of standup about feeling out of place at such a quiet event, and then kicking it off with Cyrus and Brandi Carlyle's performance of the latter's 2007 single "The Story". Di and followed up with a duet on Cyrus' 2009 hit "The Climb."
Jack Harlow continued with a performance of the song-heavy "SUV (Black on Black)", quickly morphing into his huge hit "What's Poppin'" and the Lil Nas X collaboration "Industry Baby".
Davidson and Cyrus follow up with a funny pretense about how their storied drug use and wild behavior (and Davidson's Staten Island heritage!) are a "show for the cameras."
"You can't tell anyone this: I've never really smoked s*** before," quipped Cyrus, downplaying his reputation as a major major. The two even confessed to having fake tattoos ("These are like stickers I bought from Claire," Cyrus confesses to her copious body art). "I'm not even from Staten Island," replied Davidson, who topped the 2020 autobiographical drama "The King of Staten Island."
Cyrus followed up the sketch with a rendition of Blondie's 1978 hit "Heart of Glass" and her 2013 tune "Plastic Hearts".
Rising rapper 24kGoldn, decked out in a pinstriped suit sprinkled with rhinestones, was followed by a soulful rendition of her recent hit "More Than Friends."
Cyrus returned to perform a duet with her younger sister, singer Noah Cyrus, on Dolly Parton's 1974 haunting classic "Jolene." LIke Parton, The Cyrus sisters are native to Tennessee. Anita followed up the pairing with a spirited performance of "Facking Love".
As the clock ticked from four minutes to midnight ET, Davidson took center stage to engage with audience members. Given the previous year's struggles with pandemics and other diseases, the "SNL" star suggested the crowd think about 2009 and the big events of that year, including the "miracle on the Hudson" plane landing by the veteran in New York. . A hijacking drama on the high seas by pilot Chelsea "Sully" Sullenberger and a merchant ship that ends with a bravery by a crew led by Captain Richard Phillips.
"We had nothing to worry about," Davidson joked about 2009. "It was a great year for the guys who would later be played by Tom Hanks but a bad year for the Pirates and the Geese."
Cyrus then released her hits "We Can't Stop" and "Party in the USA." took the stage to perform. In the final quarter-hour of the special, singer-songwriter Brandi Carlisle delivered a crowd-pleasing version of Bonnie Tyler's anthem 1983 smash "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
"Miley's New Year's Eve Party" was designed to capitalize on Cyrus and Davidson's outspoken persona, describing the special on the former Jimmy Fallon segment as, "That would be funny and I *****, and Together we have a show." Special guests for the night include Brandi Carlyle, Billy Joe Armstrong, Sauvity, Anita, Jack Harlow, 24kGoldn and Kitty Ca$h. "Saturday Night Live" creator and executive producer (and Davidson's boss) Lorne Michaels executive produced this special.
In addition to his work on "Saturday Night Live", Davidson has a busy 2021, with a lead voice performance in James Gunn's superhero film "The Suicide Squad", the police procedural "The Rookie" and the animated comedy "The Freak". .
