History of the Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was established in 1863. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. In fact, in the wake of the catastrophe that followed World War I and the brutal treatment of soldiers by their bodies, there was a need for an institution that could function without discrimination in such a situation.

Swiss businessman John Henry Dunant witnessed firsthand the horrors of bloodshed during the Italian occupation of 1859. Thousands of soldiers were killed and many more were wounded in one day. There was no medical team there. Dunant was very sad to know this. He and other men assisted and wounded the soldiers. He also wrote a letter to members of the family of soldiers who had been injured.

Dunant mentions the incident in one of his books. At the end of the book, he encouraged the establishment of a community that could help people in strange situations. According to his proposal, the Geneva Public Welfare Society formed a committee in 1863. An international conference was held by the committee in 1863. Representatives of 16 nations attended the conference. Many relevant proposals and policies were adopted at this conference. It was also emphasized at the conference that national committees should be set up in all countries to develop the Red Cross and to organize the assistance of wounded soldiers and other victims of war. These committees are called National Red Cross Societies.
