UFC 270 recap: Ngannou defends heavyweight title by unanimous decision

It was not easy, but Francis Naganou continued to rule the heavyweight division.

Ngannou (17-3) won the main event of UFC 270 by unanimous decision, becoming the first fighter to defeat Cyril Gain. And he did it in a surprising way, leaning on better wrestling and scuffles rather than knockout strikes.

It appears that Gain's (10-1) fight was exactly where he wanted. He achieved a takedown in the fifth round, but instead of maintaining the top spot, Gain went for an ankle lock. This backfired, eventually allowing Ngannu to regain control of the mat.

It was shocking to see Ngannu win without any significant attack. The next big question is what will happen to Nagano's future. After repeatedly saying that he wants a new contract, Ngannu certainly takes advantage of retaining the belt. UFC President Dana White usually puts the belt around the champion's waist at the end of the fight, but in this case, UFC Vice President of Talent Relations **** Maynard placed the belt around Nganou's waist. So Ngannou's future is uncertain, no doubt about who the reigning winner is.

A new flyweight champion was crowned in the fight of the night. The decision was disastrous for the Brandon Moreno-crazed crowd, but Daveson Figueredo defeated Moreno to regain the belt, beginning his second reign as flyweight champion.

After five extremely competitive rounds, it was unexpected for the judges to deliver a unanimous decision. Figueredo (21-2-1) and Moreno (19-6-2) are now set to meet each other for the fourth time, the best position for a flyweight division lacking top contenders.

The start of the card exceeded expectations. Michael Morales won his UFC debut by defeating Travin Giles (14-4) in the opening match. The 22-year-old Morales (13–0) continued his undefeated streak, with only one minute remaining in the opening round, ending the match with a TKO.

said that Nurmagomedov dominated Cody Stamon, the third-fastest submission in the history of the UFC's bantamweight division. Claiming a top-15 ranking, Nurmagomedov (15–2) fired shots early. This allowed him to bring Stamon (19–5–1) to the mat, where he quickly locked in a guillotine choke, ending the fight in just 47 seconds.

Michel Pereira also defeated Andre Fialho by unanimous decision in a back-and-forth match. Pereira (27-11, 2 NC) adjusted after taking some hard shots in the first round from Fialho (14-4). A front kick to Pereira's body helped change the direction of the bout, which he controlled in the final 10 minutes.

UFC 270 was built around two title matches, and both were delivered. Figueredo took control of the future of the flyweight division, setting up a rubber match against Moreno. And the 270 also represented a proving ground for Ngannou, who silenced every suspect during the five rounds against Gan.

Francis Ngannu never won a battle by decision. And he never needed to win the battle with a fluid infection. Yet this is what we saw in the main event of UFC 270, as Ngannou (17–3) defeated Cyril Gain by unanimous decision to retain his heavyweight title.

Gain (10-1) exhausted Ngannu in the first five minutes. Body kicks continued to add to Gain in round two, and each time Nganou attempted to attack he was largely elusive.

But the fight took a turn in the third round, when Nagano took control with a powerful takedown slam. It was the first time in eight games that Gan was down on his back, and we were treated to some jiu-jitsu from Ngannou on the mat. Ngannou could not hit hard enough to end the fight. Both men looked tired as the round went into its final moments, but Ngannu took advantage of it by securing another takedown in the closing moments.

Nganou won the third and fourth takedowns in the fourth round. Gain started the fifth round with a combination that supported Ngannu, then secured a takedown. Gain tried desperately from the top position to end the fight with an ankle lock, but it allowed Ngannu to reverse the situation.
